Clearly unique

In the late 1940s, post war DuPont introduced a new plastic technology called Lucite. The material was a of a higher quality than previous plastics. Noted designer such as Wilardy of New York created the most coveted Lucite purses. Manufactured from 1948 through 1967. Other collectible Lucite purses and cuffs from the same time period include Llewllyn, Gilli Originals, Patricia of Miami, Rialto and Maxim. Structured and shapely in many forms such as beehives, lanterns and hatboxes. Embellishments may include rhinestones, colored glass, pearls, confetti and shells.

I think these make amazing accoutrements to any wardrobe or occasion. Particularly spring and summer. Many designers, such as Alexis Bittar are including Lucite details in their accessories including, rings, cuffs and shoes. You could add a pop of color by lining the clear box with your favorite silk scarf. Glamorously tote one during a holiday or special gala, you may attract noteworthy attention fit for a star.

Lucite handbags and original accessories have held their value, and their beautiful designs will no doubt continue to appeal to anyone who appreciates these fabulously imaginative, clearly unique pieces.

Treasured designer Miriam Haskell was born in 1899, at the height of Art-Nouveau Vanguard; she was one of four children, and the daughter of small-town merchants in Albany, Indiana. Some 30 years later, Miriam Haskell would have tea with Coco Chanel while selecting the upcoming season’s beads at Madame Gripoix’s- the finest source in Paris. While Miriam would bring her young design artist, Frank Hess, Chanel was alone. They would talk. Share ideas. Trade fashion celeb secrets. They were among a new class: independent women who began their careers designing jewelry to complement high fashion clothing in an exclusive boutique.

Haskell's creations are still made entirely by hand. The value of a Miriam Haskell piece was, and still is, a reflection of this workmanship and meticulous detail. Freedom = Resistance

While in Bikram Yoga class this week, I felt as though I was hitting a wall with my practice, in fact, I felt as if I was digressing. I was becoming frustrated, thinking I was having some spiritual blockage or resistance. Then teacher said in a zenful voice "... the price of freedom is resistance."

It was like she threw a monkey wrench into this giant machine full of cogs, wheels, belts & pulleys in my head; all my spinning came to a crashing halt. Her words resonated as if in a empty hallway... echoing. "The price of freedom is resistance."

Freedom is that mental & physical place we all desire to be in. How do we know if we are there, have it or lost it? With out the turmoil or resistance we become complacent & take for grantit what freedom we have or could loose. So as life starts to throw things against you, sometimes with no reason, persevere... freedom is on the other side.

Put Up Your Cuffs

I see a lot of cuffing of jeans right now - single cuffs, multiple cuffs, skinny, wide, & high cuffs. Even cinched or pegged like I did in high school. So what is up with the cuffs now?

Cuffing started out of necessity, but then became an ever evolving trend... to look stylish with little effort.

The Ankle-Baring Cuff of a slimmer pair of jean is effortless with ballerina flats or slides; maybe even higher than normal for that summer flare. OR with boots (NOT cowboy boots) during the winter months to add detail the top of your boot, tucked in or out. The Low Cuff of your straight or wide leg denim will complement the casual style of sneakers and other laced footwear. This is a no-nonsense, casual look that works perfectly with your slower paced, “Boho-Chic” kind of day. The 80’s have cycled back around with that Pegged or Tight-Rolled Cuff. Try them with heels, gladiator sandals & slides for a cool edgy, downtown look. CAUTION: if you did it the first time around... don't do it again. With a dark pair of indigo jeans the Skinny Cuff is carefree, clean & classic. For that Could Careless Cuff, fold your jeans up only once to show the selvage and leave it at that. Choose the best height cuff for your mood & shoes of choice-- heels can either get a super high, ankle-baring cuff, or a medium-height one that teases the heel from underneath.

Avoid cuffing cargo jeans (really you shouldn’t be wearing those anyway.) Fussy or overly embellished shoes with the cuffed look can be hazardous. Do not tie strappy sandals over the cuffs of your denim, it looks over worked & sloppy... no matter who does it. Also, some denim-cuff combinations can give you an over all shorter appearance. If this haunts you simply avoid cuffing that particular pair of denim & have them tailored properly.

I received this email from a high school friend who lives in San Diego, CA. I cannot pretend to know the anguish & loss that this family is feeling; I can only imagine… a childhood friend of mine was kidnapped on his way home from school one afternoon. He managed to escape. The trauma, for him, has since faded as he has grown and is now raising his own family. Amber was not so lucky.

This was on the local San Diego station this morning.
For those of you from outside San Diego….Amber Dubois
was abducted over a year ago, but her body just found
recently after the bastard who killed her admitted to
killing another young girl, Chelsea King, in our area.

In an effort to support the family, there is a campaign
to send Amber’s sister Allison b-day cards and well-wishes,
just to make her day a little brighter. The info is below…

Inviting Change?

Do you want change in your life? Have you invited it?

First off, I am NO Life Coach; just a friend sharing the benefits & errors of my personal experiences.

So consider and answer for yourself; why do you want or need change? Do you know what that change is? What is your ultimate goal? You may or may not have the answers, but that is OK, by asking those questions you are inviting the winds your direction.

Maybe you don't know you need change; I didn't, at least conscientiously. Step off the normal path of things, such as saying YES instead of NO; or WHY NOT? I created the necessary shifts in my normal routine to see & realize the opportunities that I could grasp if I choose to. IT IS A CHOICE. (It should go without saying... but I am saying it anyway, I am not talking about anything that may be damaging to your mind, body or soul.)

Bikram became my invitation; but for you it could be writing, hiking, running a marathon, church or simple meditation. The common thread is the commitment to do something out of the ordinary for yourself. The accomplishment will become the new foundation for the next steps in your life.

Re-Shaping Your Image

So a friend emailed me, sounding in a bit of a panic. “Robert, I have an event to go to this weekend; I am loosing weight & I am in between sizes. I swim in one size, but JUST fit in the size I am slimming down to. What do I do?”

The first words typed by my fingers Shapewear— undergarments that control and smooth figure problems — like Body Perfect by Donna Karen, Spanx by Sara Blakely and there are many others. You have seen stars on the red carpet wearing them, whether you realized it or not; Rihanna & Lady Gaga dawning the foundations on the outside, remember Madonna did it too; and the glamorizing of girdles of the Fifties by Mad Men. Whatever shape you are, the shapewear works by shoring up the excess in areas that you should not have any, and reshaping the buttocks, thigh & mid-section. Unfortunately it is not permanent, it only works when you wear them.

New innovation and technology have also caused a resurgence. Heat-sealed applications and laser-cut treatments as well as lightweight microfiber blends with Lycra spandex, Modal, Meryl; organic blends such as bamboo with cotton; antibacterial and moisture-repellent applications have made the garments lighter, more comfortable and a must have.

WWD reports “annual retail sales of shapewear grew 10.6 percent to $848.3 million from March 2009 to February 2010, and unit sales increased 3.8 percent during that period, according to The NPD Group research consultancy. A leading area of growth was plus sizes of XL to XXXL or larger, with sales gains of 14.8 percent last year.”

Instructional Technologies

I gave a short presentation to a group of Fashion Students at Metro Tech High School in Phoenix, AZ. The Phoenix Union High School District has been making news for all the right reasons. Performing schools, excelling students, outstanding teachers, innovative programs, improving trends, growing enrollment and a construction wave of new and rebuilt schools are all part of Phoenix Union's success story.

The Fashion Students are educated on as many points of the industry as possible; in my case “What is a Wardrobe Stylist.” I wish they had something like this when I was in high school in addition to Home Economics & P.E. LOL!

There were over 30 students in the morning class; I was amazed how eager they were & they were taking notes too. I think I appreciated most of all the questions…. “What is a clip” to “Why would an individual need a Personal Stylist?”

I received the following email from the teacher~ “Thank you so much for speaking to our students. You were such an inspiration to them. Many of them commented about how great it was to have you as a speaker. You did such an awesome job of presenting your styling business to the students.”

Kids now days (I can say that right?) need to be introduced to not only the corporate way of life, but freelancing and vocational elements that spark their creativity & helps them discover their own gifts & passions. I really am looking forward to speaking to the afternoon class.

So please support your local schools that have adopted instructional technologies to the classroom, you will see the difference.

April 10th UPDATE: Stephanie from Collins College did NOT follow through & let Campus Staff or Security know that I was being allowed to interview the models in line, in return for my blogging, facebooking & tweeting prior to the event . Over 213 contestants had gone through the audition process; I was only able to interview a handful, before I was ejected from the property. I am truly disappointed in the miscommunication & lack of follow through from Collins College. HOWEVER, I wish ALL the local AZ Talent the BEST OF LUCK!!!

As many of you know I received an email from a representative from Collins College, Phoenix, AZ asking me to partner with them...

"...thought it would be great to partner with you in order to spread the word throughout the region about the upcoming auditions via your blog. Wouldn’t it be crazy if America’s Next Top Model came from the Phoenix area, or better yet, if she was one of your blog readers?!"

Did I have to think twice about that? NO! So I am putting it out to all my model friends on Facebook & Twitter... I TRIPLE DOG DARE YOU!!

“Up-cycling” by The Style Coach

I recently came across another awesome website – this one for handbags. It’s called reMade USA and they are based in San Francisco. All of their bags are chic, cool and very affordable. Most important, though, is that they are all made from recycled (or up-cycled”!) leather. So beautiful! Each bag is custom-made and one-of-a-kind with many styles to choose from. In fact, you can even donate your own old leather jacket – you know, the one that you just don’t/can’t wear anymore but it costs too many bucks to toss. Send it to them and you will even receive $20 off the cost of the bag. You can call or email them with any questions you have.

You can also buy the bags at Barneys CO-OP stores, but frankly, I’d rather work with the designer to perfect my unique bag!

RULES... BLAH BLAH BLAH

It is a revolution. The OLD fashion rules are changing. For instance… “long hems are for evening…” or “… white is only for summer.” Not anymore. Fashion is about your shape, your mood… your personal style.

Let’s build you up...

Do you have an important presentation? Take the tired pant suite... lets wake it up. Wear a longer, more fluid skirt or pant. Lean, lanky whites command respect. A contrasting sandal wedge gives you the forward thinking edge in the room.

Impress your new boss with a professional & detailed look of a button-up, mixed with a longer, small symmetrical print skirt, revealing a little personality.

If you are on the petite side, try a little red dress, in the new trendy tiered silhouette; it can give you the illusion of legs that don't quit. Need to “office it up?” Add a soft cotton or silk jersey blazer.

How about something a little “artfully romantic?” Full cotton ruffled skirt paired with an unexpected “zoomy” top in textured organza or silk. Interest is the key; look like someone everyone needs to know.

Feathers are BIG BIG BIG. Flaunt your plumage with a short hemmed skirt; this won’t overwhelm your petite frame. Add tights & wedge booties for those cooler nights.

Take a longer tiered skirt, paired with a structured cotton sateen jacket; keeping the volume contained, as to not overwhelm your slight frame. Add some great platforms to underscore your confidence. This is especially nice for you of taller stature.

Don’t be afraid to mix & layer opaques with transparents; flirty but not reveling is key. Don’t want to invite the wrong attention.

Think beyond the rules… it is more about pushing your limits & highlighting your personality & style. Fashion should be fun… not frightening.

Taoist Macrobiotics & Hindu Ayurveda gastronomical philosophy inspired cuisine, the belief that the quality of food can contribute to our health, well-being & happiness. I personally believe this is absolutely the truth, even if I do not practice it 100%. Think about it, why would it not contribute to the vitality & longevity in the modern world? Not only was it pleasing to the palette, the elegant presentation enhanced the already hip atmosphere & the moderate lunch price point will give you the much needed holistic experience.

DOMA Café & Gallery
I was walking back from my appointment with Elisa Palomino & thought I would give it a try. Cozy, not overly crowded, book filled café. My velvety smooth late was D-LISH, paired with the house made granola square, soft with pleasing bursts of fruit. If you get a chance it is an ideal reading spot or people watching and mingling with the local color.

Joe the Art of Coffee
Another incredible & visually stimulating with fabulous quality espresso, at five boutique-coffee locations. Most recently featured in Time Out NY & Huffington Post. I sat my stylish-self down at the one near Parsons, The New School for Design. Joe In addition to espresso-based drinks, a single-cup, drip-coffee bar dispenses a rotating selection of brews, while baked goods from native New York companies like Ceci-Cela & Donut Plant provide just the kind of breakfast this coffee addict needed. And for real bean aficionados, Joe offers classes, such as coffee's history, while sampling some fresh seasonal brews at Coffee 101. Sign me up!!

Buddakan
This downtown chic restaurant features exotic flavors of modern Asian cuisine with creativity, drama & impeccable service. The dishes come out as they are prepared, so the experience is family style. The concept is very communal & harmonious. There were so many items on the menu I want to try, I definitely will be going back.

The Jazz Standard
An extraordinary lineup of world-class artists, warm hospitality & pitch-perfect sound. From classic jazz to funk, R&B, blues & more. I had the privilege of experiencing Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society. The freshest, outside the box of big band ideals. Paired with the menu from Blue Smoke Barbecue, and if you know me... you know I LOVES my BBQ. #NYC #FOODIE #JAZZ

Elisa Palomino Debut Label Collection

Last night, Jeffrey Fashion Cares 2010 brought together fashion’s most fabulous for a dazzling evening of cocktails, a silent auction, and haute couture on the runway, on the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier. Leading International Fashion & Luxury companies came together with New York City’s charitable and social communities to benefit four of the most worthy non-profit organizations that improve the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS and members of the LGBTQ community.

Over the past 17 years Jeffrey Fashion Cares was established to heighten awareness of the plight of people living with HIV/AIDS and members of the LGBTQ community. Raising over $9 million for our communities’ most important charities & non-profit organizations.

It was the biggest night ever, 1240 attendees; that is over 400 more than last year. With a silent auction of at least 100 items & a bidding auction hosted by Christie's on 5 luxury vacations,raising $550k for the community. It was fun & a big success.

Do You Know Your ABC’s of Skin Care

Vitamin A topically applied, helps with fine lines, wrinkle and overall better skin health. Prescription products, from your Licensed Esthetician or Dermatologist, like Retin-A and Renova are most effective. A non-prescription Retinol may also be used, however it may take a bit longer to see the desired result.

Vitamin B also topically applied can aid in moisture retention & healthy glow. Vitamins B-3 (niacin) and B-5 (pantothenic acid) have become popular additions to skin-care products because of their ability to assist in retaining moisture. B-3 offers a milder alternative to acidic exfoliates like glycolic & salicylic acid, which some may feel too be harsh for their complexions. B-5 is a more common skin-care additive, and is widely recognized for its (along with Vitamin E) moisturizing ability. It's also good for those with sensitive skin, as some creams made with Vitamin-E have been known to cause irritation.

Vitamin C medical grade & topical, is a proven prescription lightener to improve dull, tired-looking skin. C serums are proven to help maintain normal cell turnover, neutralize free radicals at all layers of the skin. C greatly repairs damaged cells, builds collagen, L_Ascorbic acid is essential for cross-linking collagen molecules, lightens and brightens skin, reduces inflammation, decreases water loss in skin and helps sunscreen, acting as an additional protection factor from UVA & UVB rays and sun damage.

Vitamin D is a powerful antioxidant and anti-carcinogen. Basically, the sun’s rays contain ultra violet light that acts on unprotected skin (no sunscreen) and allows it to manufacture Vitamin D. Although this is a very easy way to get Vitamin D into your body and reap the benefits, sun exposure must be controlled. Too much sun exposure will lead to skin cancer and premature skin aging. Five to ten minutes of daily summer sun exposure on unprotected skin such as the face, hands, arms, and back will provide enough ultra violet light exposure to produce the required amount of vitamin d for the body.

Fact: The sun is just as strong ALL year round. As the FDA recommends you should be protecting yourself all year around. Anytime of the year it is suggested that you avoid prolonged sun exposure without protection. While on any skin care treatment or system, you can participate in normal outdoor activity, however, your skin may be slightly more sensitive to the sun & heat protection as normally suggested allows for us to increase the cell turn over in the summer months to prevent the damage from occurring as much as possible.

While in New York, I had the privilege to attend a joint presentation by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton Inc. & Parsons The New School for Design.

The Art of Craftsmanship Revisited: New York
This new initiative celebrates the authenticity, creativity & craftsmanship that has inspired & defined the luxury industry for years.

The students competed to create fashion ensembles & documentary films inspired by the work of local artisans and the world of LVMH. This is the first phase of this project. Parsons students collaborating across the disciplines of fashion, art, media & technology, have created a new vision for Artisanry in the 21st century.

I have to say it was inspiring. The students created the needed materials to fulfill their vision. I was so impressed, there is a spring of talent coming out of that school.

Sometimes it is about creating something amazing out of nothing.

Fur & Fur Alike

Fur conjures controversy world wide, but there is no doubt it makes a statement. Chanel made a splash in “fantasy fur” (sounds more magical than faux… right?) Karl Lagerfeld delivered an over the top “Polar” collection. Other designers have incorporated fur into their Fall Winter 2010 collections as well. Viktor & Rolf, Yves Saint Laurent & John Galliano to name a few.

So what is in your closet? Is it a real “live” fur or “fantasy” fur? Either way, if this piece is just slumbering in the back of your closet, wake it up!!! You may not feel comfortable wearing a full on fur or fur like coat; but would you wear is it as a sash, or utility belt? Maybe update a military like jacket, by adding pieces to the collar or cuffs. Even a military styled cap; add a fur band or cover the bill. OR take a measured swath & add leather ties to create a cuff for you wrist or a longer piece for a belt.

Are the wheels turning? Have your tailor help you so it looks quality. Let the fur fly. #PFW

Graffiti printed apparel is nothing ground breaking, but, it is whimsically inspiring & I am seeing a resurgence for both women & men. This trend may not be something that you would fill your closet with, however you may want to keep your eyes open and select a piece or two.

For instance, a top can rejuvenate existing bottoms or jackets that you feel are growing tired in your current wardrobe. Or you may find that comfortable Maxi Dress that will carry you from spring, summer & transitional fall with a jacket or cardigan/shrug. With the multi-colors, you can mix up accessories & create many looks.

Guys, we can pick up a t-shirt to wear from spring & layer it under a long-sleeve button down or casual jacket trough fall. Don't splurge on the large printed blazer or pant... they really become a "one time wear" item.

Support Yourself I recently had a friend over for dinner. Rather than bringing the usual hostess gift – wine or dessert – she brought her newly enhanced breasts. Talk about “show and tell”! I got to see and, yes, touch them. (Please note that she insisted: her feeling is since she spent several thousand dollars that, by golly, she wanted everyone’s “first-hand” opinion). They were very nice and definitely worth the money and trouble. But I just about died when I saw her bra! I’m sorry but how can you take out an equity line of credit on your house to buy new boobs and not put them in a proper bra? The bra was the wrong cup size and I must have pulled the back strap about six inches. That’s how stretched out it was. You should only be able to fit your hand between your bra band and back.

Think of it the same way you would buy jeans: you buy your jeans so that they just fit you, knowing that after a while they give and conform to your body. Same thing with bras. It should fit you snugly, but comfortably, on the first hook. As the bra ages and gives, you gradually move the hook to the middle then the last. Once you hit the last hook and it’s gets to be too big, then you’re ready for a new bra.

Naturally, I chided her but I also offered to go bra shopping with her. It still confounds me that well-dressed women who see nothing wrong in laying out several hundred dollars for a new blazer or designer shoes or bag STILL have the same underwear they wore in college, let alone think they are still the same bra size they were in college! It was time to be properly fitted, especially considering my friend’s new dimensions.

The very best place to be fitted is a local lingerie or bra boutique. Just about every large to mid-sized city has one. The staff are absolute experts and you get a one-on-one experience. Plus, their selections are usually better and can accommodate more than the most common bra sizes. (I was in the shop I patronize once and a woman with a 30G bust was there and they had her size in stock. A 30G!!) You can almost always get a bra custom fitted, if necessary. If you have one of these boutiques in your area, consider yourself lucky and patronize them. You’ll never go anywhere else.

Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom also have very well-trained bra fitters but please note that they fit bras very differently. NM fits by measurement using a tape then calculating cup size. You are then fitted in one or two styles appropriate for your breast shape and tissue (soft vs. firm, otherwise known as real vs. fake). I find it quite efficient. Nordstrom, on the other hand, fits you by “eye”. Meaning the bra fitter does not measure you with a tape but instead gauges your size by eye then has you try on a few predetermined “fit styles” they select for you. It’s time-consuming and not for the impatient but you will finally get a properly fitted bra. I have been fitted both ways and both were correct (32C demi-cup). I would skip Victoria’s Secret altogether. From my experience and the opinion of many others, their fitters are not as detail oriented and the quality of their bras is not very good. A good quality bra runs about $75. You only need 2 or 3 with one of them being a convertible bra that can also be worn strapless. With proper care, they will last for several years.

*Tip: Once you are correctly fitted, buy just one bra at the store. Then go home and buy your additional ones online from lingerie shopping sites such as www.abriefaffair.com (my favorite), www.figleaves.com or www.barenecessities.com. Not only will you save on tax but you can always find an online discount coupon as well as free shipping. Your best bet is to find a favorite site and sign up for their emails. I always stock up during their special promotions.

As for care, the two most important things to remember is to “stack” your lined/padded bras, cups up, in your drawer (unlined ones can be folded in half). This is important because if you crease or bend the foam in the cup, it will NEVER go back, even after washing. Do the same thing when packing. Speaking of washing, beware of Woolite. It is notorious for eating up elastic. You must hand was in a very gentle detergent such as Forever New or Dreft Laundry Detergent for baby clothes. Never, EVER wash your bra in the machine, even if you put it in a lingerie bag on the gentle cycle.

They will be ruined in no time, trust me. So get a couple of girlfriends and go treat yourselves to a bra fitting and a new bra this month. You won’t be sorry and you’ll look and feel terrific!

Wear something that makes you feel empowered & comfortable, without breaking the bank. People can tell when you’re not comfortable & will most likely avoid you. Party-goers don’t want to engage “Connie Complainer” if they don’t have to.

No matter what your shape, find a silhouette that enhances your assets & hides your flaws. It could be in your closet or at JCrew, Anthropology or that boutique around the corner. In this transition from winter to spring, I would recommend colors like grass green, jade or emerald, midnight blue, lapis, magenta, cantaloupe, melon, soft grays and of course black.

So let's build you up…. say you have a strapless black & white print dress that you love & is super flattering to your shape; pair that with a black heel, maybe with an interesting detail. It is still cool at night, so a soft cashmere shrug that covers your shoulders & maybe at least ¾ of your arms would be warm & hide the back of your arms.

Next, add a super interesting necklace, cuff and or clutch. Having that interesting piece that has a pop of color will invite conversation to you.

Top it off your nail color. If your nails are short & feminine don’t choose a matching color to your clutch or necklace. It says… “I am trying too hard.” Get a fresh coat of your everyday favorites. Even if it is super different… again great conversation starter & says you’re an interesting character & you might be someone fun to get to know. If your nails are longer & more “vamp,” chose a softer, more elegant of your favorite shades. It says smart & sophisticated… another person to get to know.

Fast fashion is a term used to describe clothing collections which are based on the most recent fashion trends presented at Fashion Week in both the spring and the autumn of every year.These trends are designed and manufactured quickly and cheaply to allow the mainstream consumer to take advantage of current clothing styles at a lower price. This philosophy of quick manufacturing at an affordable price is used in large retailers such as H&M, Forever 21, Zara, and Top Shop. It particularly came to the fore front during the vogue for "boho chic" in the mid-noughties.Recently however, these retailers have been in pending lawsuits over violations of Intellectual Property or Trade Dress rights. Target is becoming more well know for contracting quick designs from designers like Anna Sui, Isaac Mizrahi, Rodarte and many other well-known emerging designers.

While I think it is great to give everyone access to a designer or trend, I am always wary of the dilution of the brand or label. By dilution I mean less unique or coveted.How less special would that Louis Vuitton bag that you saved & saved for be if they decided to sell them for half the price at H&M; of course the quality is not the same, but outwardly looks the same. It would make me want to put it in my closet for a while, till the craze faded... now you know.

During the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, on 600 Madison Ave, Shanghai Tang hosted an open house, a celebration of the Chinese New Year, debuting the Spring Summer 2010 Collection, "Love Restraint."

A sensual artistic collection that embraces the euphoria of love with a sense of restraint & creative defiance. Majestic mountains, bold optical art of the 60s in Hong Kong and patterns of Peranakan ceramics. With modern & distinctive sensibilities, reflecting the Chinese culture & the value of restraint, resulting in a harmonious blend of diverse inspiration.

The materials were lavish, almost liquid... the velvet hand ran through my fingers. The silks shimmered & the Linens soft in structure. I especially enjoyed the men's suite, all Mandarin in style. It is nice not to have to wear a tie everyday. Mandarin collared suites give you this opportunity... of course you could tie on a scarf or cravat & look very dashing.

Malan Breton Fall Winter 2010

Style 360 ~ Malan Breton Fall Winter 2010

The runway event was a Style 360 venue. The performances were great & created an invitation for each collection. I Sat behind Alex McCord of The Real Housewives of New York, I don't watch it... anyhoo. Over all the collection was good. As a stylist, I noticed lots of details that were not cleaned up before the models came down the runway; such as long threads, creasing in the wrong places etc... I know I am way to anal retentive.

Here is a brief bio of Malan Breton. Born June 16, 1973, the designer and creative director of Malan Breton Collection. Breton was born in Taipei, Taiwan and currently resides in New York City. He has been designing since the age of 11. Malan Breton was a contestant on the third season of the reality television program Project Runway biography. Breton has interviewed designers like John Bartlett, Max Azria of BCBG, Luca Orlandi of Luca Luca, and others when hosting video & editorial columns for La'g Magazine

Balancing Your Energy to Achieve Higher Self-esteem

Balanced Individuals who have well-developed masculine "take charge" energy alongside an abundance of reflective feminine energy will have higher self-esteem. Their good Gender Physics will allow them to be both assertive and empathetic, improving their performance and ultimately their good feelings about themselves.

Imagine a manager who has to fire someone but can do it with sensitivity. Or a single parent who lovingly institutes a strict curfew. Then consider a child who daringly rescues, then cares for a stranded bird. Or a business owner who admits mistakes and rectifies a problem with consumers. These would be examples of people with good Gender Physics - they are blending the complimentary masculine and feminine energies. They easily take the action masculine energy demands but they do it using the important people skills that feminine energy provides.

Self-esteem comes from being confident in one's ability to achieve success both socially and at mastering tasks. And those who can navigate the bumpy road of firing an employee with sensitivity, saving and nurturing a fledgling bird, keeping peace with a teenager around curfews or with rectifying problems with customers will feel that they have accomplished something of which they can be proud. They use both energies with ease, seeing no downside to either one. As a result they have more success which ultimately increases their self-esteem.

I observed this in a board member in my working career. This woman wasn't afraid to ask tough questions and she stood up for herself if she felt the guys were getting priority or leaving her out but she was a good listener and coach. She wasn't turf conscious and would send management complimentary emails following an important presentation and decision. She had a quiet confidence that comes from balanced energy and good self-esteem.

I so enjoyed this last trip to New York for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, I wanted to share some new favorites with you.

Intimate Boutique Hotel

As the newest addition to the Chelsea Flower District, Hotel Indigo New York City-Chelsea is surrounded by rows of compelling art galleries, the best in fine dining and nightlife, renowned theatre, and chic boutiques, creating the ideal setting for a refined and relaxing New York travel experience. The rooms are a perfect size & the service & hotel staff could not be nicer.

Meat Fest

DBGB Kitchen & Bar is Chef Daniel Boulard’s new lowdown downtown place where French brasserie meets American tavern. 14 varieties of house-made sausages, mouth watering burgers & shellfish plates. Wash them down with fantastic crafted beers, 22 to be exact. Don’t forget the decadent desserts… SERIOUSLY!!!

Great Greek

As soon as you walk through the doors of Avra Estiatorio, you are transported to an authentic & cozy Villa in Greece. The freshest selections from land & sea. I would recommend ordering a selection of Mezedes & wine with your friends & share. I actually loved the “Octapodi.”

Live Music & Dining

In a newly restored 18^th century brownstone, the Black Duck Bar & Restaurant takes it’s name from the rum running boat know for it’s involvement in an incident that ended prohibition in the 1920s. Live jazz & cabaret music on the weekends & James Bond films on Sundays. The staff was fantastic & the food was great.

See & Be Seen

The secret of Cipriani isn't about what can be seen or touched, but what can be felt and sensed. The original, Harry’s Bar, a 1931 dream was established in Venice. A vision of simple luxury came to touch the souls of people all over the world. My experience of Cipriani Downtown was like no other; true service and devotion. You are not rushed off, no matter how crazy crowded it gets. Tantalizing people watching too… dinner & show.

Japan Fashion Week Organization ~ Preview Fall Winter 2010

The idea of this US preview in New York, is to introduce & strengthen Tokyo’s function as a hub for fashion & business. In addition JFW in Tokyo strengthens ties between the “creativity” of designers, “craftsmanship” of manufacturers and “trading” of the apparel & retail industry. JFW in Tokyo 3rd intent is to strengthen emerging designers, while working to heighten the appeal of the city of Tokyo.

Suzanne Day, buyer & stylist, with renowned taste in apparel selection & I attended the event. The venue at 82 Mercer, was perfect for featuring 8 Japan based designers, including Aptform, Chaolu Lab, Miko Sakabe, Naoshi Sawayanagi, The Dress & Co., Tiny Dinosaur & YU.

We loved & appreciated all the designers for their vision & convictions. So I will just highlight a couple.

Aptform by Michail Gkinis
The fusion of Greece & Japan creates a unique design aesthetic that is inspired by traditional design techniques. Simple & original design paired with refined sensibility. The marriage of materials such as ultra soft leather with wrinkled boiled wool. Each silhouette has purpose, but feels relaxed. Contemporary & comfortable simultaneously.

Tiny Dinosaur by Naomi Yamamoto
The focus was “shade” & “harmony” which can actually be seen in the clothing, aiming to create a sort of chemistry between the clothes & the wearer. Naomi Yamamoto mixes a complex blend of “contradiction” or “crash” between elements & pieces to highlight the contrast while complimenting the over all design.

This experience of this event has put Japan Fashion Week in Tokyo on my list, and I look forward to attending in the near future. #NYFW #JFW

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week ~ Trias Fall Winter 2010

The collection is based on pleats & overlapping the feminine form elegantly. Vertical Strength is born in the strictest meaning as a pure definition… absolute straightness, gathering strength in it’s movement. A definite contrast to the previous collection based on Conical Forms. I actually feel this collection will be more flattering & wearable this fall & winter. I also really loved the hand knitted ombre tights in brown & grey shades. They would add interest to any classic look you may already own. If you remember last season, I said the shoes painfully stole the show. This season, the stiletto sandals were secondary, practical & supportive to the looks walking down the runway.

The Catalan (Andorra) designer has been working in fashion for more that twenty years & his collections had traveled around the world. Delicacy, elegance, originality and functionality are some of the adjectives that best describe his creations. His creation of "Artificial Intelligence" in architectural silhouettes. Soft shades of gray, chocolates, with mauve undertones & of course black. Lots of shoulder play; may not be the most flattering on the female form, but it sure does make a statement of confidence.

Amy Smilovic’s Spring Summer ’10 Collection was light, colorful & youthful; Fall Winter ’10 is sophisticated with the appeal of opposites- masculine meets feminine. Draping paired with structure; rich neutrals & contrasting brights. Contrasting fabrics include artillery suede, viola chiffon, nubby wool & wool jersey to name a few. I feel that the collection is about experimenting with separates & pairing them with items you would not “normally” consider putting together. Such as a chiffon dress with a long-sleeved tee. So grab a glass of wine open up your closet, start experimenting… you may discover your next signature look.

Thuy has take the mix of casual chic & understated romantic sophistication of her Spring Summer ’10 collection up a notch. Focusing on romanticized opulent fabrics in vibrant jewel tones. Shimmering "croc" embossing, reflective details & color effects. Chunky embellishments with fine crystal-infused (Swarovski Elements- Crystallized™) fabrics.

Exaggerated animal prints are sticking around, with fur or “fur like” trimmings. Thuy seemed to be enamored with “Fox tails.” Draping has moved from the hip to the front. While it may have mannequin appeal, it may pronounce your tummy.

It was a packed house at the Vivienne Tam showroom tonight! The “Chinese Zodiac” inspired line was filled with overtones of ruffles, fur, sequins & lots of layers. It was beautiful to see the way that seaming was done to make the jackets look like they had satin monkey hair flowing off the bottom.

Her use of multi-colored gathered appliqués made the stylists swear the skirt on the black belted dress was made with multitudes of flowing sequins; when there wasn't a single glitter in the dress! Who says that you can’t wear animal prints, sequins & printed tights? She paired snake print sequins with an animal print blouse, balanced with the patterned tights… absolute eye candy! My absolute favorite of the night was the chic crème tiger slashed coat! If anyone wants to get it for me… I will forward you my shipping address!

Makeup Artist Charlotte Willer, with Maybelline Cosmetics, informed me that the look of the night was the bold bright red lips. Color Sensational Lip Liner "Red #50" for the lip to stay bright & not bleed or wear off! The clean fresh glowing skin was achieved with Maybelline Mineral Power Natural Perfecting Liquid Foundation and Maybelline Mineral Power Natural Perfecting Concealer. Brows were evenly defined & smear free with Maybelline Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil. The only product used on the eye area was Eye Studio Color Plush Quad & Beige Shimmer point on the inside corner of the eye. They finished off this fabulous clean look with a perfectly high & tight ponytail! #NYFW

Nicole Miller use of subdued colors with confident textural tonal layering is wonderful. Deep hues of midnight, brick, central park (that is deep green if you were wondering) & asphalt play into literal mindset of the “City Landscape.”

The layering of various textures allows for creativity of the “silent patterns” with a look of complexity.

The asymmetrical lines are so flattering on most figures & the textural layering is forgiving for others. Put these silhouettes on your shopping list.

Lee Alexander McQueen.,. who would later find fame as fashion visionary was born on 17 March 1969 in London. Surprisingly, the boy destined to be a True Master in high couture and style was fathered by a polyester clad London cabbie. By the time he was sixteen, McQueen had decided to devote himself entirely to fashion. He dropped out of school and took an apprenticeship at the Savile Row tailors ‘Anderson and Shepherd’. This experience gave him the opportunity to sharpen his technical clothes making skills and tailoring, skills for which he is famed today. Top British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, dressed stars from Sarah Jessica Parker to Rihanna to Nicole Kidman in bold shapes and colors, was found dead in his home on Green Street, in London today.

Fresh Start Women's Foundation, a Phoenix Metro nonprofit, committed to helping women help themselves, has partnered with Physician Laser Centers to provide women in-need with no-cost access to aesthetic skin care services.

As part of the program’s launch, Physician Laser Centers is inviting Valley residents to visit Physicians Laser Centers to nominate a women they love that puts others before herself & who is deserving a makeover that will refine and refresh her appearance. As I prepared for Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week, I discovered this packing strategy. Now it is Spring Break, and I want to share it with you again.

We have to be smart as to not over or under pack. Plan each day in advance & that depends on the weather of your destination. This will help you decide how many pieces of clothing to take. Too much and you will regret carrying everything, and the airlines will help themselves to YOUR precious spending money. Too little & you will have to spend extra money. It is is a balancing act for sure.

Let's make this fun...lay them out as if you were playing tic-tac-toe.

Select 9 pieces of clothing consisting of:

1 blazer & 1 jacket

1 sweater, 1 t-shirt & 1 cotton shirting (Guys a button down)

1 cami or tank top (Guys a Polo)

1 trouser, 1 jean & 1 skirt (Guys shorts or khakis)

How many outfits can you make with just these 9 pieces? Go ahead... take your time... I'll wait.

I know there are a possibility of 20 outfits... 14 are shown below.

Other useful packing tips:

If you have limited space, do not roll your shirts, pants, etc. Instead, fold your shirts into squares & stack them. In the space you could fit about 3-4 rolled t-shirts, you could fit 5-6 stacked shirts, of course this all depends on your luggage size.

Stuff your socks inside your shoes if there is no other room for them.

Pack fragile items in the center of your case. This way, they are less likely to be broken. If it is a favorite bottle of perfume or cologne, by all means, seal it in a Ziploc baggie; that way if it does get broken your clothes will not be saturated in Chanel No.5 or Gucci Pour Homme.

Put dress shirts on top so that you may remove them promptly for hanging or ironing.

Put shoes in felt shoe bags so clothes don’t get soiled from the soles of your shoes

What Shape are You In?

So many of you have asked about dressing for your shape. I have posted the basics below; please ask me more questions... there are so many helpful hints that I would love to share with you.

The Pear
You typically have a long slender neck, narrow shoulders & small to medium bust. You will also have a defined waist, curvy hips & backside with full thighs and calves. The objective is to bring the eyes to your face, create the appearance of wider shoulders & bigger bust. Blouses, fitted or skimming with texture, detail or print with light or bright colors; scooped, draped, V'd, round or squared neckline are SUPER. A-line, flared leg denim or trousers in darker hues equals slimmer hip & bottom. AVOID: Jackets & tops that finish at the widest part of your hip. No pockets on the rear or flashy belts, they draw attention.

The Apple
You may have a fuller face & neck, broad shoulders and fuller bust. Also, a more undefined waist, narrow hips, a flat rear but shapely legs. You want to lengthen your torso, create the appearance of slimmer shoulders & waist; draw attention to your best attributes... a more confident you. Wrapped & fitted tops with v-neckline are ideal. Darker, solid camis or tanks with a jacket & belt or blazer are super. Your shorter, a-line skirt can be bold & printed. Flat front denim & trousers, light or faded washes with back pocket flaps create shape. AVOID: Baggy or puffy tops (including shoulder pads) & bottoms that are too tight.

The Hourglass
You generally have symmetrical shoulders and hips. Full, shapely bust & defined waist.You want to draw attention to your waist & accentuate those feminine curves without adding size to your hips or shoulders. Wrap tops do this really well. A scooped or V neckline lengthen the body too. Most colors & small patterns look fantastic. A well cut jacket or blazer goes a long way. Denim & trousers slightly flared will balance the hips. Mid to low rise waistline depending on your tummy. AVOID: Baggy or shapeless lines, makes you look frumpy. Short skirts, chop you up & will make you look short; we want you to stand tall.

The Rectangle
Your figure is straight up & down, full neck and broad back. Average bust, undefined waist, with great legs & arms... very athletic. Highlight your great legs & thigh by creating the appearance of a curvier waist & bottom. Spaghetti strap, wrap around, V or scooped necklines emphasize your bust. Jacket & blazers that cinch at the waist create instant hip. Most colors & small prints look swell. Denim that hugs & lifts your bottom is a great trick. Small back pockets spread apart, on your denim & trousers, makes your bottom look fuller. Mid to low rise, depending on your tummy may be ideal. Pencil to flared skirts are great. AVOID: Vertical patterns & clinging, fitted tops.

Have you decided which one you are? Well no matter which one you think you may be, the key to them all is BALANCE and... a well fitted bra with good support is a must.

Today I was reunited with a friend of the past. We used to work retail & get into trouble together in Kansas City, the Country Club Plaza to be more specific. All the memories rushed right back into place as if it was yesterday.

In finding more about her current life... Jackie, is living in LA with her husband; and she is The Style Coach. Like me, she believes with a little effort, inspiration & guidance everyone should be able to open their closet & dress themselves with style & confidence. I could probably guess that there are many of us who have a few pairs of trousers, suits, shirts & as Jackie discovered sweaters that we have not been able to bring ourselves to toss or donate. As she noted it could be "because it holds sentimental value or is your favorite color..." read more I have held onto items because of pattern or the quality of the item is still evident; but the silhouette is out of style.

I have made it a practice, as of recent, to have those items tailored, so they actually fit this 2nd chance. I have even taken a couple of trousers to be turned into vests. My tailor laughed the first time, but after we had the first fitting, she was excited for the creative challenge. HINT: throw the pant legs over your shoulder... see... a vest. I even left the zipper in place to connect the front of the vest. The pockets are in perfect position & the belt loops allow me to add a belt to my ensemble if I desire.

Jackie discovered, through Rachel Zoe, "Reknit" you can send them your sweater; Reknit magically turns it into a scarf, shrug, wrap or leggings for that matter.

So look in the back of your closet, rediscover those items... let your imagination reunite you.

Imagine Spring

Well, Spring is just around the corner; for most in the "arctic" Midwest & East Coast it is not arriving fast enough.

Here is a inspiring glimmer of what the warming spring breezes will bring your direction.

Happy mod hues of the 70's, softened as if washed & line dried; with intense yellows, sunset violets, red & sky.

Powdered pastel shades, embraced by confident tones of khaki & chic creme.

Flashy acidic rinses, conjuring mouth watering tart smoothies, with hues of faded sidewalk cement.

Finally, party tints containing combustible red & deep violet, blended with neutral arid landscapes, including clay, beige & cactus.

So close your eyes to the ice laden electrical lines; imagine sitting under blossom filled trees, song birds carried by the warm spring breeze, as the sun gently kisses your face... before you know it spring will be here.

Another Letter to a Make Up Artist

Typically this would be an "Ask Robert" entry, but the following questions are about Makeup Artistry, so I thought we should refer an expert & friend Heather Wilson.

Betty Ann, of Stilletto Chick Sees the World asks "... did you see the photos of Nicole Kidman with the white of her under-make-up showing through? It made her look like she fell in the powdered sugar bag. Should we quit wearing white highlighter? If not, how do we avoid this?"

Heather writes:

What happened to Nicole Kidman on the red carpet, would not make the headlines if any of us made this mistake... but still!! None of us want to have this embarrassment happen to us!

It was rumored, that Nicole Kidman used the excuse, that her makeup artist did not blend her powder.

The only reason that I can come up with - is that the makeup artist- used a whiter powder and left it a little heavier while she finished Nicole's eyes (it is a MUA trick to do a heavy powder under the eye if you are touching up the eyeshadow, so any fallout from the shadows are easily wiped away with out having to redo the concealer and foundation.) She probably did a little heavier powder on her nose, she might tend to be oily as well. If Nicole was in a rush to get on the red carpet, it may have been an oversight to not wipe off the white powder.

I DO NOT think that we have to give up our white highlighting powders. The key to wearing any powder is to make sure it is a sheer, translucent powder & BLEND, BLEND, BLEND!!!

There are lots of translucent powders out there that go on very sheer. My preferences are the Make Up For Ever or Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder made especially for the under eye area, and it is best to use a large fan brush for the face & for under the eye area it is best to use an eye crease brush to do the final blending of the powder for you!!!

Well the last day of 2009. It has been CRAZY. I turned 40, engaged in Facebook. Joined Twitter & started blogging. Lost my day job due to economy woes. Experienced my first LIVE Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, met all kinds of cool people. On the flight home from MBFW-NY; serious brainstorm, you will see the fruits of this new year. Had some amazing photo shoots & forged some amazing camaraderie & friendships. Plus, have continued working with Apparel Designer Joy Li, who I adore and can't wait for her to launch a men's line... maybe this year?

All I know is that I am grateful for the people (that's you) & events that have supported & ushered me to today. So hold on to your hats, 2010 is going to be a wild ride... full of surprises!!!

Tonal Layering=Effortless Elegance

WWD is calling out "Layering" as a Pre-Fall trend for 2010; but this is something you can be doing RIGHT NOW.

Layering can be a little tricky if you are using multiple colors and may require bold leaps on your part. However layering with tonal or like colors can be a breeze. Make it more interesting by mixing subtle patterns &/or textures. The above images look so easy, because they are. I am not saying buy every "twin-set" you see, but keep in mind what is already in your closet & then when you see that wrap or bolero in the same shade with an interesting weave or shimmer you have a brand new outfit at the cost of single piece. As you practice this your friends will notice a sophistication & you will know how effortless, elegance can be.

Andi,
Congratulations on joining the 40 is the new 20 club!! We may be 40, but that doesn't mean we have to look it or feel it! I am a firm believer in taking care of yourself, and not using surgical fixes either.

First question... do you have a good skincare routine? I love Sampar Skincare. Their Eye Rule & Nocturnal Mask are amazing; I have experienced huge results on my own little crows feet!

Second question... are you drinking enough water and getting enough sleep? I know we all think we are drinking enough water, but we really should be drinking 1/2 of our body weight in ounces of water daily. It ends up being a lot more water than the 8 glasses we were always told to be drinking growing up! Sleep is not always easy being a mom, but on those nights when we do not get enough.... don't forget to have a spoon in the freezer so that we can place it under our eyes to help with any puffiness & darkness. (That and a great concealer works wonders!! )

Speaking of makeup, make sure that you are using a "skincare primer" (Smashbox Cosmetics or Makeup Forever both have a great ones available at Sephora.) I am a big fan of the Makeup Forever HD Foundation, or the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer. You want to put it where you need coverage, not necessarily all over the face, and please make sure the color matches your skin-tone! If eyes are your concern, use a concealer over an eye cream. Your concealer should be one shade lighter than your skin-tone to brighten the eyes.

Since you said that your hairdresser cut your bangs way too short, be sure to define your eye brows with a soft brown or light gray eyeshadow. This is a great easy way to open the eyes without having to get Botox!

Chanel Pre-Fall 2010

This Paris-Shanghai RTW collection as a whole seems very exotic. Models strutted on a 280-foot-long barge in matte ebony and projecting an imagined voyage of Coco Chanel’s trip to China, titled “Paris Shanghai, A Fantasy." “It is about the idea of China, not the reality,” Lagerfeld told WWD.
There are pieces I find so inspiring. I enjoy seeing how Chanel’s signature "tweed ground" metamorphoses in each collection. Again military influences are quite evident, including the Terracotta Army & opulent Imperial Court. I love the neck & waistline embellishments. The shoulder cap adornment only seems appropriate to me at... Buckingham Place for instance. I am wondering if the knee/thigh high boots are in a satin material or patent leather? I hope satin.

So, you will see these silhouettes re-animate throughout the upcoming fall season, don’t be afraid, explore your creative ideas… incorporate "like" styles into your existing wardrobe reality.

Finding your fit... an adventure; Strutting in confidence... priceless.

Denim shorts for SS'10... NOT so ground breaking, but fits & lengths are in abundance. Take the time to find the right fit for YOU!

#1... your size fit is the most important, finding it can be an adventure. Do this when you have time & are not rushed. There are so many brands & each brand has loads of silhouettes or fits; you will find yours… be patient. If you are limited in time, you will get agitated & create an overall disappointing experience. I speak from experience, LOL.

BRAND: each brand fits different, all denim is hand assembled from 119 to 127 pieces (less for shorts). Once you find a fit you like you can try different brands, each brand of High Rise, Low Rise, Mid Rise, Skinny or Loose fit WILL vary. The denim should feel snug at first, but then relax as it conforms to your body.

RISE: referring to the length from the bottom of your crotch seam to the top of the waistband. Depending on your body shape, the rise that you select can work for or against you. Try a Low Rise on, if your pelvic area falls over the top “muffin top” then select a rise that is a little higher Sometimes just an inch can make a world of difference in keeping you all together.

SHORT LENGTH: There are, what feels like, an infinite amount of short lengths. Determine your comfort; this may included, how tone you legs are, blemishes or if they have seen the sun. Be realistic with yourself; the sales person won’t, they are not as invested in you. Bring your true friend or someone who will be brutally honest with you. Don’t be offended; this walk through the fire is a building experience.

POCKET: This is sometimes forgotten… until it is too late. Pocket placement, if it is placed to low, it could make you bottom look askew. The pocket should cover the lower ¾ of your rump. If you have a flatter be-hind, then a pocket with a flap may give the illusion of a fuller look. Try it. If you have a rounder “asset” already then avoid the pocket flap, it will only add bulk to your nice shape.

WASHES: Denim colors are abundant, select a variety... have fun.

DETAIL: Be cautious when purchasing trendy crystallized, riveted, sashed or painted denim; longevity from season to season will be shortened. So be selective, if they are not terribly expensive & you are ok with only getting 2 seasons out of them then OK. But you & your pocket book will need to determine this.

If you have taken the time to find the proper configuration then you will be able to strut in confidence. NEXT… sandals, heels or tennies?

Holiday shopping... for yourself?

It is that time of year, we are all out holiday shopping for family & close friends. Sometimes this becomes more labor intensive than we remember from the year before. So as a reward we like to treat ourselves to a little holiday magic too. But we are still being mindful of our pennies.

"Even when they're buying for themselves they are still looking out for value, and so they're still not spending as much as they used to," said Eric Beder, a retail analyst... read more.

Oh there are lots & LOTS of sales out there; even more so... we need to be careful. In this mad rush for saving a buck, we need to guard ourselves from buying "crap" that is poorly made or just does not look good on us. Be particular as you are fishing through that bargain bin.

Selecting "core value" pieces can feel good, bring a fresh look to your closet and be a wise investment.

In doubt? Call or text your shopping buddy and ask "do I really need this?" I do it for my friends & family all the time.

Are you proactive?

Many of you know I am a Wardrobe Stylist for Photographers & Magazines. I also offer Fashion & Style advise. On occasion, a young model &/or parent new to the industry ask for a little focus on this strange world. I find it fascinating how mysterious the modeling industry is. Here is what I offered to "Dad" about his 18 year old Son today. Remember this is just a excerpt of possible conversations that happen all over the world... not limited to modeling by any means.

After speaking with you today, I understand the frustration. As a Stylist on set, location or runway, I see the lack of education with the new models; which in my day used to come from the agencies you were signed with. That was their part of the investment in the client, the model. This statement is definitely generalized.

In looking at the website you have created for "Justin," I agree you have a super start; more than most. My professional opinion, is that "Justin" has a fantastic look, appears comfortable in front of the camera & we should see him in a Hugo Boss &/or Ralph Lauren ad campaign, print or otherwise when he gains experience... no question. So if these labels interest him, if not pick one that does, then study what the images & what the guys are doing. Tear them out of the magazines; tape them up by the mirror & practice. If you want it you need to study it, live it & breathe it. Read the LA Times, NY Times & WWD. Keep an eye on trends, follow the blogs. I use Bloglovin to select the blogs I want to read daily… it funnels them to one page for you to see.

If it is runway, then you should know about every event in the world. New York, Miami & Berlin are by Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Paris & London are uploaded by the venue. There is literally a Fashion Week every week of the year some where. Watch the videos, study how they walk... then video yourself doing the walk.

So should he beef up? NO, lean & defined. Definitely improve the abs. The current pictures with his shirt open, leaves me wondering “…why is his shirt open?” With more ab definition, then I would get it. So when his definition improves replace those images with the new ones.

Image #3, the first head-shot, that is tilted a little, is really good. You can see into him, I think that is important. He can connect with the camera, therefore the viewer. I love the athletic shots; they say he is more than a face! Now concentrate on are variations of subject. He is selling, apparel, sunglasses, athletics, masculine beauty, a little seduction & (very important) vulnerability.

Heather Wilson & I discovered this Michael Maddox on Facebook. I am in no way endorsing him, however, he has 20 years of experience in the industry & may offer some very insightful direction. Also, I receive emails & texts for castings all day long. There are all sorts of casting agencies online.I have even received some great jobs on CraigsList.com. Be proactive, don't wait around for opportunities to appear. As always use CAUTION!!!

This is probably plenty for now. Please absorb and let me know when you are ready for the next round, we have only dusted the lens. Put yourself out there, stay in front of the agency. Show your growth & that you are reaching for the stars.

Roller Coaster line....

Yep you guessed it... I went to Bikram Yoga class. It was an amazing session. I went for me, not to balance on one foot or prove anything... even to myself; but to celebrate the first day of my new adventure.

Besides burning over 900 calories, I believe Bikram Yoga mirrors your life at that moment. As I have said before, there have been days that I have been agitated & then my Bikram was distracted and restless, leaving class feeling exhausted from the struggle.

This was not the case for this class, I felt light & reverent to the moment. The instructor stopped me on my way out... I am in line for a roller coaster ride called new Life Adventure (Orient Express, if you are from KC, circa 1980 Worlds of Fun). I am so excited & nervous in anticipation of this ride. Let alone the exhilaration of the actual ride.

OK, so here is the deal~ Jackets or sport coats are the most sensible investment when buying for a special event or classy dinner out in New York Or Orlando. The most modern classic colors are black & charcoal. Navy & camel brown are more conservative casual & less imaginative. In the charcoal I like a tonal stripe or plaid pattern. The black I like solid & clean. The 2 button jacket is still classic in styling, 3 & 4 button come & go.

While your looking at jackets, check out trousers... flat-front. I know pleated pants are perceived more comfortable, but less tailored looking & when you sit down you have a wad of fabric in your lap. Again, black, charcoal & midnight are my favorite; a lite weight wool material is wearable 9 months out of the year in most climates.

Pick up a tie here & there. Consider a paisley, or stripe by Etro, in deep rich tones like maroon, dusty grape or a festive gold for your winter evening.

Here is your shopping list: 1 jacket, 2 ties & 1 or 2 trousers; 1 white & 1 black button down shirt will do too. The above pictured items are suggestions, you can shop for these similar silhouettes anywhere from Men's Warehouse, Macy's, Nordstrom or Barneys NY. You don't have to buy everything all at once or from the same place. Wherever you go, make sure they will tailor your trouser or jacket for you. It is worth the additional fees, because the whole point is for you to look put together, polished & confident.

The event starts at 7:00, do I have to wear panty hose-tights??? I'm still tan from the vegas trip but don't want to be too casual or dressed inappropriately :) black or nude...I just have no idea what's expected! and you are the only fashion guru !!"

OK, here is the deal, if you were on the West Coast I would say bare tan legs are perfectly acceptable. Your in the Midwest so tights or hosiery is more proper. SO.... if your bare tan legs are flawless, no bruises or unsightly blemishes, not a second thought. But if you feel it would be more appropriate I would recommend a sheer black, smokey translucent color hose. Avoid designed or crystallized ones for this weekend... could appear to "costumee"... save that for the upcoming winter holiday events.

Bonus tips:

Wear a wrap or "Pashmina", not a coat if possible. It appears more elegant to hand off a wrap than a quilted snow coat. LOL

Accessories should be statement or vintage pieces. Nothing dainty. Don't over do it. Before you head out the door, look in the mirror & remove one piece (as practiced by Coco Chanel & myself) This shows you have discerning classic elegance, no matter what your frock is.

Have a fantastic time to night, your going to WOW them.

Ever since I was a young girl (don't laugh), I have always had an interest in chatting with people about beauty, fashion and grooming habits. A few days ago I asked my fellow "Twits" on Twitter for a male volunteer to interview for my blog about men and skin care.

Robert Ballew, a Phoenix-based Wardrobe Stylist, who I have been Tweeting with for some time now graciously granted me a telephone interview. We talked about his personal thoughts and experiences with skin care and facial treatments as well as grooming tricks for men!

{ME} Hi, Robert! So nice to finally talk to you on the telephone! It's a real pleasure, considering we have been "Tweeting" together for months now!

[RB] Thank you, Lori. I am so excited about doing this interview with you! I enjoy reading your tweets, as well as other people's tweets!

{ME} Can you tell me a little bit more about yourself, your skin care regimen and facial treatment (if any) experiences?

[RB] Sure. I'm forty years old, grew up in Manhattan, and I have been living in Arizona for the past six plus years. I've been getting facials for the past ten years, thanks to my best friend who owns a day spa. For the past three years I've been more focused on treatment facials and get skin treatments every two weeks.

{ME} What kind of treatments have you been getting for the past three years?

[RB] I go to an Esthetician at a skin clinic for microdermabrasion and dermaplaning (exfoliation using a razor) as well as peels. Sometimes she does a calming facial, but there is no facial massage or extractions. My skin goal is softening of fine lines and smooth skin. Occasionally I will go to a day spa for a relaxing facial that includes massage of face and neck.

{ME} Robert, have you ever considered or have you ever had botox or any other cosmetic procedure?

[RB] I did have Botox. I was resistant to it at first, but my partner talked me into it because he had such good results with it. It worked really well to soften my upper forehead lines and the lines around my eyes. I only get a little, just to soften. I don't want to look frozen, just relaxed. I like a little movement. Ha ha! I did try the new generic Botox and it did not work for me, but I understand the generic works for most people.

{ME} What's your daily home skin care regime?

[RB] I've been using the Obagi system for three years. I also use La Roche-Posay scrub, SkinCeuticals B-5, skinCeuticals C & E Ferulic, Retin-A and SPF 35 every morning. Sometimes I use Retin-A on my entire face, and other times I just use it around my eye area.

{ME} (I'm thinking, "How do I tell him this gently")... So, Robert...Are you saying that you use all of the steps in the Obagi line? (He says yes!). Are you aware that all Obagi steps contain a very dangerous ingredient called Hydroquinone? The FDA is considering putting a ban on Hydroquinone

[RB] Oh, I did not know that. Thank you for sharing that with me. Are there other products that you would recommend for lightening dark spots?

{ME} Yes! Some of them you are already using. For instance, the Retin-A and Vitamin C is helping to lighten your skin. There are also natural lightening products like Epicuren's Skin Lightener, Balancing Cream and Rhonda Allison's Brightening Cream Enhanced as well as Rhonda Allison's Naturale Mega Brightening Serum.

[RB] I guess I have some research to do!

{ME} Okay. What about shaving, waxing, and thoughts on your skin?

[RB] I don't have any problems with shaving. My skin is oily, dry and sensitive. I change up my skin care routine based upon the time of year. Normally, I use fewer products in the summer and more moisturizing products in the winter. I use SPF every day. I get my brows waxed every two weeks and I did a series of laser hair removal for my chest hairs.

{ME} What are your personal tips on skin care and male grooming?

[RB] The most important thing is to groom for yourself and not for anyone else. Taking good care of your entire body is just "smart-health". Also, living in Arizona where people's feet are exposed, I notice that many people forget to take care of their feet! It's important to put lotion on your feet! Oh, and I'm a big fan of drinking lots of water. My motto is "Take Pride in Yourself".

{ME} I like that motto! Last question; do you think men talk about skin care and spa treatments with each other?

[RB] It depends. Most men probably don't talk about spa treatments and skin care. They probably talk about it with girlfriends who get them interested in trying spa treatments. When men go to spa's and see the benefits, they realize it's like exercising...something important to do for yourself as part of a complete health plan.

Ridding Boots are made to be used for horse ridding, not everyday wear. The classic boot comes high enough up the leg to prevent the leathers of the saddle from pinching the leg of the rider, has a sturdy toe to protect the rider's foot when on the ground, and has a distinct heel to prevent the foot from sliding through the stirrup. The sole is smooth or lightly textured to avoid being caught on the tread of the stirrup in the event of a fall.

Selvage Denim

Selvage denim, is made on old-style shuttle looms (less than 1% of all denim in the world) rather than modern, projectile looms. This means during the fabric weaving process, the cross-thread goes back and forth as one continuous thread, rather than as individual threads for each cross weave. As a result, selvage denim has a nice clean edge.

Japanese selvage denim is the finest and most rare on the market. Some of the hottest brands out there are A.P.C. Denim, Somet Denim; Nudie Denim, woven in Japan, constructed in Italy and Naked & Famous, constructed in Canada. The Stronghold is woven and constructed in Los Angeles, CA.

Recommend care? I was told by my Personal Shopper at Barneys NY, to wait about a year before washing or dry cleaning, so they have time to conform & wear to your bodies unique attributes. So we could call these "Green." (LOL) I love having the comfort of denim and how clean & sophisticated selvage denim looks with jackets & blazers. So find some and check them out.

"Fall leggings should be more glamorous & in spiring..." says Lizzie at shiningtrends.com. I must agree, but leggings are just the beginning. Accent the holidays with a sequins jacket, tunic dress or skirt. Tonal sequins, black on black or charcoal on charcoal, creates a sleek, elegant silhouette that can become core value "After Five" pieces in your closet.

If you want to step outside the box, seek out a rich bronze or pewter color. There are flashier, more colorful tops, just be alert, they are "trenditional", one season only pieces. If you are minding your monies & expected to attend (and enjoy) winter parties... be smart, be inspiring & be glamorous.

Here is the deal~ If you are 6... of course. Cute? Cheap? Why not spend a little more & purchase 1 or 2 pieces you can wear all the time... like a signature?

Why throw your money away on a cheap bracelet or necklace that will turn green or break, no matter how cute? (ok, ok...rhetorical) To collect in your drawer or a box; only to rattle around and disintegrate more.

Save up two or three additional paychecks, and procure a piece that makes a statement about you. Something you could wear with most everything; to work or play. By being selective of what you purchase & wear, you display a discerning elegance, no matter how much you did or did not spend.

Always be on the look out for extra special pieces that you can wear for those cocktail events or moments with that special someone. Don't forget to check out estate sales or vintage boutiques. Let me reiterate, ...it is not how much you spend, it is how you spend it.

Again if you are the exceptional 6 year old reading this... tell your Mommy to enroll you in gifted classes immediately and to start saving for Yale or Harvard.

When shopping for core pieces, keep in mind the approaching season and the existing items in your closet that you can rejuvenate. This way you are not over spending & maintaining stride with the latest fashion.

The Green Report

With the big corporations publishing reports that show their companies in the RED, I wanted to issue a trend report that is in the GREEN. (Insert courtesy laugh here.)
Back in February I attended "The Train", one of New York's markets showing European samples, in this case for Fall|Winter, delivering now. The trend pop color was green, strong confident green... emerald, jade & chartreuse. Not a wimpy green... like moss or celedon.

In the October issue of Vogue Magazine, page 168... The Green Movement "... Jade is one of fall's most enviable stones (and shades) and among the best in baubles that we've seen this season, reports Robert Sullivan

So I wanted to let you in on the secret; if you already have it in your closet, bring it on out. If you are out shopping & see it... GET IT! "Based on an architectural perspective, a "Lineal Study" has at it's core the aesthetic of innovative linear construction."

That was an under statement. I appreciate the "structure adapted into patterns" & "wrapping in conical shape"... but the heels were of the DEVIL. The obviously poor shoe fit was so apparent, we the viewers, were wincing with pain. The models held their own... but you could tell they were crying inside. One model actually took one shoe off & continued walking in the other shoe & tippy toes. How bad is it when the spectacle that is the apparel is over shadowed by the ill fitting shoes.

Anyway...
Trias "structures" were engineered from silk georgette, waxed silk, silk mesh & silk organza. The color palette consisted of stone grey, Mirta grey, grass green, sulphur yellow & graphite black. I loved the colors, especially for spring & summer.

You will notice that the leg openings are smaller than the top opening... there is your "conical shape." Even the MBFW website left off the more "architectural" looks.

While I am not really into the Anthropologie venue, I appreciate the market they are targeting and think they have hit it dead on. I think the above copy states perfectly what we saw on the runway. The palate was soft, muted & neutral. The simple draping of crepe, chiffon & silk georgette induced sensuality. I LOVED LOVED the suede Ankle Strap & T-Strap sandals. Soft, understated & maybe even comfortable.

I also was delighted to see the reinvention of the "cage metal" mesh dress, skirt & top. Max & Lubov show their edgier side, but still pay homage to the sexy... feminine form.

So on to the collection...

Color palette, stone, indigo, sepia, Wasabi, aqua, red, black & white. I love the prints; especially the shagreen... stingray bone. The Spring fabrics consisted of comfortable Japanese cotton, denim, seersucker & silk crepe.

An interesting note: I have previously called out draping on the hips and suggested to be very careful when entertaining this notion. Brian Reyes has also incorporated draping on the hip... however sculpted the fabric in such a way that it hold it's own silhouette, gracefully masking your own. This gives you more forgiveness for that extra Gelato you had the other day.

Brazilian-born Carlos Miele made his debut at London Fashion Week during the Spring 2002 season. Here we are at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York Spring|Summer 2010.

Proudly celebrating the female form in chiffon, charmeuse silk, tropical wool (sturdy but lightweight for spring & summer), cotton tulle and of course leather & lace. Using colors of guava, pink, nude, white, black & gold. Abstract prints of beach, snake & "onça pintada."

His "pleated bolero" jacket is a fun twist and will be wearable to a number of functions. Made in silk, tropical wool & dark denim. One would be able to throw this over a camisole for a fun night out or silk blouse for a refined "polished" look.

Another detail I loved was his "silk dread locks" shown as a belt and or dimensional detail on a vest or silk bolero.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week MONARCHY Spring|Summer 2010 offerings for men & women, a nice change of pace for me.

For the Gents, conservative hues of blue, grey, teal, light caramel & chocolate. I was so excited about the use of cashmere blends in the men’s slim cut suites. Also loved the glen plaid sport coat, washed lambskin jackets, black gingham cotton military shirt & “decade distressed” denim. The cardigans were collegiate… not a fan. The skinny linen & silk scarves… enough of those already.

For you Ladies, Shades of white, teal, floral blue, navy & khaki. The description of metallic linens, jersey draped tops & asymmetrical draped leather jacket were of the more interesting. But the slashed white denim & “paper bag” shorts & long pants were a big disappointment.

For those of us who grew up in the 80’s, we called it "trash bagging” or “cinching.” The excess was bunched up around the top above the belt. Now the bottoms are made with the excess already puckered up. It looks like one is being squeezed out of the bottoms. I am "pursing my lips" right now. Don’t even get me started on the slashed white denim…ugh.

I was very excited to see this collection, but very concerned with the outcome. And at the perceived price point, REAL core value pieces, for women, are needed to balance out the trendy pieces. Just my thoughts... see for yourself, click on the images.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week TWINKLE by Wenlan Spring|Summer 2010 presentation was filled with white, black, turquoise, orange & pink. Charmeuse silk, pencil slim pants, and shorts & skirts with full pockets.

My favorite was a long sleeved silk tunic dress of “dove grey”, with a contrasting linear floral print around the hem. The back was draped. One could wear it bare legged, of course, with leggings, or even denim. Sandals or heals will make it Grammy Award ready or casual night out on the town. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week ROSA CHA’s Spring|Summer 2010 was a swimwear presentation. Whites with black "Swarovski like" polka dots, one & two pieces. Then mixed in with butter yellow, steele blue & tangerine orange. Playful black & white stripes brought in a 40’s era. Ending with woven strips of color brought interest to tops & or mid section of the swimwear.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week PORT 1961 Spring|Summer 2010 presentation was absolute pageantry. The soft “blossom” colors (thank you Miko) gently floated down the catwalk like the Geisha. Asymmetric soft origami like structure inner mingled with flowing seductive silks. Organic elements such as reeds were used to secure the neckline and a "bamboo steamer" like corset was used too. BCBGMAXAZRIA Spring|Summer 2010

This was my very first live Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week runway presentation.

The lights dim, the beat thumps, the DJ spins “Dime Store Diamond” Spotlights up and the first model hits the runway. It was ELECTRIC.

BCBGMAXAZRIA Spring|Summer 2010 was of course very BCBG, body conscious, draped, rouched & sheer. I found the use of the brightly colored digitized print extremely playful, especially when mixed with a coordinating “jewel tone” colors.

My largest dislike were the “cut outs” & pattern quilting. They were jarring. The other design issue is the draping on the hips. If one doesn’t have hips then it is great because it gives one the curve. But if one has curves, either the hips will fill in the drapes or the drapes will ride up and bunch at the hip.

However the final gowns I thought to be more subdued and elegant. While in black or white with sequence peaking out from under the draping layer or “splattered” over top.

These will be a big splash for the 17 to 26 year old crowd like it or not.

"The Girl has a Tougher Edge... Experimenting & Abstracting"

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week-NY Nicole Miller Spring|Summer 2010

Her statement reads "The Girl has a tougher edge. Pushing forward body consciousness, reinventing fabric manipulation; a modern take on prints. Experimenting with new technology & abstracting traditional craft."

Color palate: "digital riptide", "ocean current", gunmetal, ivory, gray, opalescent & moss. As always...black & white.

So this is how I go in to a show... I am looking at the pageantry of course, but more importantly the practicality. I felt that Nicole Miller was pushing the limits... as she stated ...she delivered. However if it is going to make you feel more conscientious or create more work for me in a photo shoot then I guess I would have to say "Thank you..no." It is so important for one as a woman to feel exceptional when all dressed up, not feel like you have to have "Crisco & fishing line" to keep you in it.

The Color & "digital riptide" or "ocean current" blocking, I am not a fan of. I did not like it in the BCBGMAXAZRIA line either as noted.

However, I loved individual pieces such as the "Tidal Pleat" biker jacket, "Sequin Scuba" stretch pant or skirt" & off white distressed leather jacket. The preceding could be mixed in with your previous spring fashions. I loved the moss gray cotton-metal stretch biker jumpsuit, but it would be for limited events.

Over all, she delivered "edge." I was honored to experience the Nicole Miller "experimentation."

So, sitting front row makes a huge difference from standing room only or even 4th or 3rd row.

The over all palate is pistachio, rose-pink, chiffon lime, pastel-yellow, lime apple, powdered blue, deep pink and the of course white, black & bronze.

Everything was pleated, embellished, asymmetrical & draped. One could not go wrong acquiring anyone of these pieces.

To make a "forget me not" statement, the Chiffon deep pink gown with deep pink pearl embellishments with the silver leather belt is it.

If your are looking for practicality, you will only get it in the color...black & white. White organza top with ruffled sheer front & long black mermaid cut silk skirt. OR black sequined short jumpsuit/one piece with deep satin collar & long black multi-layered tulle skirt...HOT... definitely unforgettable.

What "Hipsters" wear

The night before MBFW 2009 begins, I attended a super trendy opening at the SOHO Grande for Kenzo Minami.

The "hipsters" included super chic to super trendy. Cocktail dresses to charmeuse silk blouse pants. The commonality was deep muted colors & fun. Its not the "Inaugural Ball" by any means. This type of event you can show your signature style. Really simple & sophisticated with a flashy bangle, super special heal (suede is the "it" fabric of choice) or shoe & belt for you gents. Even in this setting you can pull of the "rocker" look...jeans & t-shirt; but you better top it with confidence otherwise you could look like a sloth. So pull out the charcoal, black or eggplant garb and finish it with a zest of color, grab a cocktail, view the art & party on.

Making My Voice Heard

I volunteered for Fashion’s Night Out event, “Street Team” is what it is called. So I along with other volunteers went to designated locations in the city to hand out maps of all 800 participating retailers & boutiques.

As I start, my fear of being in front of people rushes me. My heart starts pounding, my mouth dries up. I can barely talk. I yell... more like whisper "…map for Fashion’s Night Out…hehehh.?!?!” Nobody looks or even acknowledges I am there. Then I took a deep breath, say it again. "Join us for Fashion's Night Out tomorrow night." NOTHING... NOBODY... OH THE REJECTION!

I actually wanted to quit. No one was looking, I could dump the maps and "high tail it" back to the apartment. Yes I actually thought it.

But I did not. I summoned my courage, dug way down deep where it was hiding, and yelled again "GET YOUR MAPS FOR FASHION'S NIGHT OUT... 800 PLACE TO BE & BE SEEN!!!" Flocks of people came at me clambering for one of those precious maps till I had none left. Well not that fast. But I kept at it, making my voice heard, wanting the people of New York to not miss out on the opportunity that they may need. What if they meet someone and find a better job, or the love of there life. It wasn't about clothes & stuff, it was about making a change, stepping out of their routine.

I think they could tell I believed it too. I was doing it.

Fashion's Night Out... more than shopping

Today, September 9th. Preparations are underway for tomorrows big night out. (side-bar: me sitting in a coffee shop writing on my laptop... I feel so Carrie Bradshaw... a shorter haired, non-smoking, male version of course)

Anyway... I am quite excited for the Fashion's Night Out event. Fashion retailers across the city, approximately 800 stores, boutiques, big & small, will be keeping their doors open late to encourage New Yorkers & visitors to re-experience the fun of fashion.

The city is unified to not only stimulate the economy, but boost funds for the National September 11 Memorial & Museum & awareness for the NYC Aids Fund.

Retailers selling the official FNO-NY t-shits will donate 40% of all sales to the Memorial & Museum.

Also donations of new or gently used clothing, through a city wide Clothing Drive will be given to the NYC Aids Fund and distributed to approximately 17 aids related charities throughout the city.

So the next 10 days for me are not only about the future of fashion but what is happening now, not only in this city, but every city across America. We need to pull together, be mindful, respectful and do what we can for our communities.

Sometimes it is what you don't wear

As a Fashion Stylist I spend many hours pulling apparel, shoes & accessories for photoshoots, runway events and/or simply dressing my clients, friends & family. You know who you are!

The philosophy that I style & live by is~

"it is not what or how much you wear, it is how you wear it"

While the image I have chosen, is extreme, it illustrates my point.

Create your own style... "Signature Style." Here are some simple "do not" tips, that will stick in your memory... like a bad song.

Red patent shoes are for 5 year-olds & hookers... think about it. Go ahead. Think about it. "Bing Bong" there it is. ~Thank you Carolyn Biesk, her philosophy of 65 years.

If you think your signature style is 173 bangles on one or both arms... it is not. What it is... annoying to everyone around you and shows a lack of simple creativity. Instead, highlight one piece that is special or has sentimental value. It show decisive elegance. I & Everyone Else around you, thank you!!

I cant believe I need to say this but... "slutty is not sexy", neither is a short shirt or low rise jeans exposing your "muffin top." Dress for your body type. Find things that lightly skim the body... not stretched so tightly you look like a strung up pork roast. Again, I & mostly Everyone Else, thank you!

Bikram Bits for Everyday Life

As many of you know or will soon learn, I hit the gym and practice Bikram Yoga on a regular basis. Occasionally the instructor will share simple statements of wisdom that resonates in my core and I feel the need to share.

Form=Confidence
In Bikram or any Yoga practice, the form of your practice is extremely important to receive the full benefit of the pose. The depth is not quite as import because it can deepen the longer you practice or vary depending on how your day has gone. Giving 100% in your form, will generate the confidence to endure to the end of your pose. Give your all in whatever you do; your daily tasks, work, life & play...100%.

Gratitude=Energy
Acknowledge the positives in your life. This gratitude will generate the energy you need to face the task at hand. Focusing on the negatives, situations or even people, can drain you so fast. Surround yourself with the positive; acknowledge it. Receive the recharge.

Practice these anywhere:

Need energy? Focus on your inhale. Listen as you take in full, deep breathes. Keep the focus, full, deep inhale. This will rally the energy for the task in front of you.

Need to relax? Focus on your exhale. Listen as you release your breath. Keep focus as you empty your lungs all the way. This will calm your nerves, your heart rate and your racing mind.

There you go, now your are doing Bikram Yoga minus all the "hot'n sweatiness."

Yoga Tips for Everyday Life

Let go and relax into it~
Some things in life do not necessarily require us to "bully" our way through. This evenings Bikram Yoga class was so hot & humid, I was having difficulty focusing. "Pushing" through may have agitated me even more. I had to let the heat go; let go of the air, it was suffocating. Just relax into it. I know that I use this daily, instead of getting all excited or upset about an uncontrollable event, I calm myself & give in, accepting it with grace. That is when solutions present themselves.

Look into the mirror and give yourself an approving smile~
Do it, try it... you know you want to. Anytime, no mater your day or how you feel, steal a peak of your reflection and say quietly to yourself "... I am so proud of you." Do it, it will lift your spirit & your step.
